Social networking giant Facebook is due to enable hashtag support to help members keep track of trending topics.

Hashtags are a great way to start or join an online conversation, made popular by micro blogging site Twitter. Simply adding # infront of a word will automatically link your comments to a thread, enabling you to see what others have to say on the topic.

It can be used to keep up with current events and pop culture, add context to a post, enter competitions and to create a buzz with your marketing campaign.

“The # symbol also carries a lot of meaning around it. It’s basically a message to other twitterers that you’re talking about this topic, and if they want to talk about it with you, they should use this hashtag in all their tweets; otherwise, you may not know that they’ve tweeted about it”.
