We came across a video this morning that proves that having talent and a great idea is often more important than just the kit you use.

Watchtower of Turkey is a stunning, eye-popping edit of beautiful golden hour pictures of Turkey, shot by a young Italian guy called Leonardo Dalessandri.  He claims to have shot it in 20 days.  It’s already been noticed on Vimeo, where it has been awarded a “Staff Pick”.  Take a look:

Cue lots of questions from filmmakers about what equipment he was using, as they try to pick apart the tricks and techniques.  Was the camera something high-end with expensive lenses?  A top end Canon?  Or a Red?  Maybe something 4K?

In an answer on his Facebook page, Leonardo says he actually shot the whole thing using just a Panasonic GH3, some kit lenses, and a GoPro.  And then cut it on Final Cut Pro X (our NLE of choice), before grading it in Lightroom.  Cue collective head-scratching by those who often talk more about their cameras than their pictures.

For me, it goes to show that it’s often the idea that’s the most important thing.  That and talented people working the camera, directing and editing.  Don’t get me wrong, I love the advances in camera and editing technology.  Bring it on.  But at the end of the day, if you don’t know what you’re shooting or what you’re going to edit it into, it doesn’t matter whether you’ve got a 2K, 4K or a pinhole cam in a box of Special K.

So, hats off to Leonardo.  It’s a great film that looks great to our eyes. Especially on a dreary grey Autumn afternoon.  That said, we are now trying to pick apart the shots to work out how you’ve got such great aerials, steadicam style shots and timelapses with just a GH3.

Hmm…
