Facebook have confirmed the rumours that Instagram will now have a video feature.

After sending out coffee ring stained invites to press via snail mail, simply reading “A small team has been working on a big idea. Join us for coffee and learn about a new product”, social networking giant Facebook has set rumours flying as to what the mystery product could be.

Sources had been leading to a video feature for Instagram, the photo-sharing service acquired by Facebook in April 2012.

Dubbed the ‘Vine-killer’, the update is expected to allow Instagram users to shoot a short 5-10 second video and add filters in a similar way to Twitter’s six-second video-sharing app Vine.

“Getting video on Instagram is a move that would make sense. Specifically, it looks like a direct response to the rising popularity of video-sharing services, namely Twitter’s Vine. It, and others like Viddy, Cinemagram and Socialcam, sometimes get described as “Instragram for video” apps.” – Tech Crunch

Facebook enabled clickable hashtags last week, allowing users to view related posts in the same way as other social networks such as Twitter. “We’ll continue to roll out more features in the coming weeks and months” Greg Lindley wrote on Facebook’s blog.

Only time will tell if Instagram videos can overtake the likes of Vine. But it is clear that short-form video is growing in popularity as a way to share and connect with others personally, and professionally.
