Every April thousands of video production professionals descend on Las Vegas for NAB, where top manufacturers announce their star products and big video-related news is released. This years NAB opened with massive announcements on 4K cameras, drones and a few surprising software updates. Whether you’re interested in 4K cameras, motion graphics, video editing or VFX there is bound to be something for you.

We’ve collected the best stories from this years NAB, including news from Adobe, Apple and Blackmagic.

Final Cut Pro X 10.2

As early adopters of Final Cut Pro X, we were excited to hear about the latest update. FCPX had its fair share of criticism, but this is all changing with more professional video productions beginning to warm up to the editing program, including Warner Bros. recent film Focus. Exciting new updates include improved tools for colour grading like masking and upgraded scopes, fully featured 3D titles and various workflow improvements. The will also be updates to Motion and Compressor.

FREEFLY

We’ve been busy using drones on some recent shoots, so we were keen to see what Freefly’s new ALTA had to offer, but the real game changer was new operating tool for their gimbals called the MIMIC. The only downside is that you still need 2 people operate it. Check out this video of the MIMIC in action.

Arri Sky Panel

Arri have released a new LED panel for ultra soft lighting, working perfectly for a number of video productions, but especially beauty shoots. The combination of curated selection of diffusion panels, LED mixing chamber and large light aperture allow the light to wrap around objects, making for perfect beauty lighting. The LED are low powered, so they can be taken into field and they’re also very bright, meaning you can also use them right next to a window or even outdoors.

Adobe Character Animation

The newest edition to the creative cloud family. Adobe Character Animator cuts down on the countless hours in post on animated video projects. All key frames are now recorded, making adjusting motion graphics and presets much easier. Only a preview was released however, when it finally comes out alongside the upcoming version of After Effects, we expect it to have a massive impact on animated postproduction.
