Over the last few years drones have been finding their way into many situations that previously were only reserved for expensive helicopter video productions. You’ll now find their usage in numerous situations, from aerial film shoots to professional photography. Drone sales have also surged with amateur film makers experimenting with countless possibilities capturing tricky and extraordinary aerial shots for only a couple of pounds.

No More Controls

Now meet Lily, a drone and action camera all-in-one that can be simply thrown into the air and programmed to follow its subject around, without the need for any controller. When it’s released later this year, it will feature a 1080p, 60FPS camera and another 720p, 120 FPS camera. In addition, it also encompasses a built in GPS which is built to stay fixed on a mini tracking device that can be worn on your wrist or put in your pocket.

Not Like Others Drones

The device uses a combination of GPS and visual processing to track the user, by containing an accelerometer, gyroscope, barometer, GPS and three cameras. One will do the recording, one to visually track the user, and another camera looking at the ground to make sure it’s stabilized. Unlike most drones (which are mostly controlled by radio control or tablet based apps), the Lily will fly itself. Using its cameras and built in GPS it will notify the cameras to where you might be. Using an app you’ll be able to set up basic instructions such as: follow, take off, stay or land. With the app you can set more specific instructions, like making the camera switch to slow motion mode when you either go faster or jump into the air. In addition, the drone is waterproof up to 1m under water and will also float, allowing you to safely land it in water if needed. Size-wise, it easily fits into a rucksack and weighs less than your average laptop.
