Making video production more sustainable is something that is one of our key goals. We know that our industry is a large contributor to climate change but let’s take a look what can be done to help.

In 2023 the impact of climate change is clear to everyone, the problems are not going away and change is needed urgently. Just little changes to everyday life can help contribute to saving the environment in a number of ways and when planning your next video there are a few things you can think about doing.

WHAT SUSTAINABILITY MEANS

Sustainability has been a word we have heard regularly over the past few years but 2022 has seen it come to the forefront of a lot of news broadcasts, social media posts and company pledges. Today nearly every business in every industry is having to explore how they can move towards becoming more environmentally mindful with things like carbon emissions, energy usage and sustainable alternatives.

WHAT CAN BE DONE TO AIM FOR SUSTAINABLE VIDEO PRODUCTION

Here at Holler we have taken a few measures to try and be as sustainable as possible.

This year we invested into some new LED lighting which uses significantly less energy than a fluorescent bulb and our previous panels. Some of these lights can even be run via V-Lock batteries while on shoots which not only helps in places with little access to power but also helps cut our usage but encourages us to turn light off when not in use.

We try to keep printing to a minimum, using google drive to store documents like call sheets, scripts and more which has helped reduce both waste and usage at the office and out on shoots..

Working near London gives us the great opportunity to use public transport to our advantage. We do a lot of shoots in central london so using the trains to get in and then the tube system to get around means we reduce our carbon emissions massively. Some of our team also use electric cars and when travelling to shoots where public transport is not usable the crew will car share together.

Another way we lower our carbon emissions is through the use of remote meetings. This was one of the only positives left by the

pandemic and allows us to jump on calls at any time of the day with clients all over the world without the need of having to travel from afar to be in the same room.

Not only does this help with sustainability but improves our workflow!

Finally, waste is a big problem and in an industry like ours kit is constantly evolving and upgrading. We shoot on some of the best cameras and lenses available however there sometimes comes a shoot where we need a very niche piece of kit. To save having to buy something we would only use once we would hire in reducing our carbon footprint.

That’s how here at Holler we are actively trying to better our practices in turn making video production more sustainable.
